Biovision 2010

The Project

In 1992, during the Rio Earth summit, 168 countries acknowledged the urgency to protect the biological diversity, and signed the Convention on biological diversity. Eighteen years later, in 2010, the countries are expected to show their progress around biodiversity protection, during what will be the UN International year of biodiversity.

In this context, the BioVision2010 project aims at taking stock on biodiversity protection by visiting different hotspots all over the world.

The Goals

  • Illustrate the importance of biodiversity and how it is protected: biodiversity is an intricate issue and the general public does not understand its importance, how it is threatened, and how it can be protected. To illustrate this issue, we will present the information gather on the different sites, through a website with satellite images and geo localized information, and creating short documentaries.

  • Illustrate how satellites images can be use for sustainable development and biodiversity protection: NGOs, private firms, government and local populations could use satellite images and their potential manipulations to visualize the issue and observe evolutions. BioVision2010 wants to actively promote the benefits of the technology.

What areas do they explore?

The team is going to visit biodiversity hotspots in the following countries in Africa, Asia and South America from September 2009 to August 2010.

  1. Kenya
  2. Madagascar
  3. France - Réunion Island
  4. Thailand
  5. Indonesia
  6. Australia
  7. Vanuatu
  8. France - New Caledonia
  9. French Polynesia
  10. Brazil
  11. French Guyana

The BioVision2010 team will also visit different Planet Action projects in relation with biodiversity protection to report on how satellites images support these projects. These examples will help illustrate to the other projects the potential of using and analyzing satellites images. We will also collect material to enrich the Planet Action website.
