Astrium GEO-Information Services initiated Planet Action in 2007 with the conviction that Earth Observation technologies can help fighting Climate Change. The company provides free satellite images from various sources and technical expertise to the projects.
Planet Action was joined by ESRI from the beginning. The company donates software licences and technical expertise to the projects.

NSPO donates data from satellite Formosat-2 the first and only high-resolution satellite with a daily revisit capability.
Digital Globe donates high resolution imagery from Quick Bird satellites.
CRISP donates satellite imagery which is archived in Singapore, as well as technical expertise.
On Marth 7th, 2008, UNESCO signed a partnership convention with Spot Image on Planet Action.
This provides a valuable support to Planet Action and on the other hand, it sustains the activities of UNESCO which relate to the protection of World Heritage sites and of Biosphere Reservations impacted by climate change.
UNESCO promotes Planet Action among its institutional partners (such as UN agencies,
national delegations…) and promotes the results of Planet Action in its programmes of
information and education about the environment and climate change.
ESA supports and presents Planet Action within many European institutions.
3i3s supports Planet Action in communication and outreach activities, as well as in networking and in events organization.

With Planet Action, the objective is to enable organizations as well as local governments to manage existing data and use it as baseline to plan their interventions and monitor their progress and impact. Thus, capacity building is one of the key elements in a CartONG field based project to ensure sustainability.
